Internet of Things (IoT) as Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Enabling Technology towards Smart Readiness Indicators (SRI) for University Buildings

Non-residential buildings contribute to around 20% of the total energy consumed in Europe. This consumption continues increase globally. Smart building proposals (focused on Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB), air quality monitoring, saving with thermal comfort, etc.) were already necessary before 2020, and pandemic has made this research development area more essential. Furthermore, need meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) obtain technological solutions based Internet Things (IoT) requires holistic contributions through real installations that serve as spaces for measuring, testing, study research. article proposes a “measure–analyse–decide act” methodology quantify Readiness Indicator (SRI) university reference environment efficiency COVID-19 prevention models. Two conceptual (physical digital) within two dimensions (users infrastructures) are designated over an IoT three-level model (information acquisition, interoperable communication, data-driven decision). An ecosystem (sensoriZAR) was implemented proof-of-concept smart campus at University Zaragoza, Spain. Focused CO2 results showed effectiveness installations, demonstrating potential SDG-enabling technologies. These allow not only experimental lab tests (from authors’ expertise several specialties Industrial, Mechanical, Design, Thermal, Electrical, Electronic, Computer Telecommunication Engineering) but also direct application academic works, projects institutional initiatives, extendable professional environments, cities.
